Just wanted to share some thoughts from my time in the Word this morning. Hope youre blessed by it as I was. I have been reading through the New Testament for the past month for a class, and I was reading through 2 Peter this morning. In the first 2 chapters of 2 Peter, Peter is writing with warning of false teachers. As I read through these chapters, an issue of conviction was brought to mind. As Im sure all of you know, a few weeks ago the State of NC voted on Amendment One, the legalization of same-sex marriages. Over the days before and days after, the facebook world blew up over this issue. Everyone sharing their opinions and arguing with those who disagree with their views. As I read so many, I wanted to respond so badly out of my frustration. I withheld, until about a week ago, and finally gave in and responded to a friend's (an unbeliever) status. I wrote (in my opionion) a simple and patient response defending the view of For amendment one. My comment was quickly questioned and argued against by many. I think sometimes I am guilty of finding comfort in my Christian bubble, and I think that everyone shares in my views and believes in the Bible as Truth. Well, I was definitely reminded that this is not so.

1 Peter 15-16
" but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame."

Oh how crucial it is for us to be prepared to make a defense for the Gospel. If you are going to so strongly believe in something, you should be able to explain why you believe what you do.  But this is not the only command of this verse - It is also very crucial to do so with gentleness and respect, with a good conscience. I believe that this is where many of the church have failed over this issue.

As I was reading this morning, I was brought through 2 Peter.

2 Peter 3: 14-18
"Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen."

Many of those who argued against my views, were using Scripture, but way out of context! Should I be so suprised? Those who do not believe, do not hold Jesus in the same perspective as I do, nor the Bible. Knowing this, I am called to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord. We should not act out of frustration and try to argue to win our point.

2 Peter 3:8-10
" But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed."

The Lord is patient and so gracious, and are we not striving to be like Him? Where is our patience and grace with those who do not believe? We should responsd to them out of brokeness over their state of unbelief, rather than frustration over their differing views. The Lord desires that all reach repentance, and we should share in that desire, with the same grace and patience. Let us make a defense for the Gospel, and do so with grace, to bring Glory to His name, and Make His Name Known Among the Nations!!!

Do you ever feel like as soon as you get used to the way things are, things change. Its a good thing that we aren't those people who do not like change, if we were we would have it rough. God had opened up an opportunity for David to switch jobs. However, this meant less hours and less pay, and no benefits. So after much prayer and consideration, we faithfully walked through the open door. So David has quit his 2nd shift job at Cintas and has moved to a 3rd shift night auditor position at a hotel three nights a week. This will hopefully allow for more time for schoolwork and for family, and will be a much easier load on David's body. However, this leaves us short each month on paying bills, so David is currently seeking to find a second part-time job. Monday he will going in for training at an Ice Company (you know the people who take the big bags of ice to convenient stores, etc.). So pray that this will work out with his complex schedule and will be enough to make ends meet.

Through all of this, God continues to show His perfect provision and never ceasing Faithfulness! Oh Praise God! I have been so encouraged by His faithfulness. Thank you for yours prayers and please continue! You have no idea how encouraging it is to know we have brothers and sisters lifting us up in prayer. We serve a Mighty God, who never ceases to pour out His love and grace on us! Oh how sweet its gonna be to stand before My God one day and praise Him face to face and give Him Glory!

On another note, I (Laurel) am taking an Old Testament and New Testament survey class this semester. In case you don't know, Southern has a Wives Institute for all the wives of Seminary students. Our classes meet once a week at night. Most of the classes are taught by the Professor's wives, however several are taught by the professors. I am currently taking OT/NT with 2 of the professors, 1 of which is David's Greek professor. Over the last couple of weeks, discussing the Old Testament, the Lord has really refreshed my desire for the Old Testament. I have always loved the OT and find it intriguing and encouraging. But so many people push the OT to the side and only focus on the NT, and how many preachers always preach from the NT? Why do people think the OT is old and doesn't apply to us, or its boring, or we don't really need to read the OT. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." ALL Scripture! The Old Testament is God's Word. And we are called to read and Know the Word of God. Not to mention the Magnificent display of God's power, love, faithfulness, and patience throughout the OT, plus so much more. So think about that. I pray God will refresh your passion for His Word (all of it).

We love you all so much and miss you all dearly. Thanks for reading and keeping up with us. It means more than you'll know. Feel free to email us or write us - we like getting mail :)

Spiritual Blessing

This is something that has been in my thoughts for a couple of months now, and daily surfaces to the forefront of my mind. So I am writing this out of conviction and wanted to share what the Lord is teaching me. This thought began while I was reading Shadow of the Almighty by Elisabeth Elliot, a book about the life and testament of Jim Elliot, a martyr for the faith in the 1950s. If you have not read this book, DO IT! It is a very challenging and encouraging book reflecting the life of a man of great faith and passion for the Lord. Jim had written a journal entry discussing the idea of spiritual blessing. He stated that we so often pray for financial blessing in our life, but how often do we pray for spiritual blessing, is it not of more importance? At the time of reading this, it struck me as a new thought. I remembering thinking 'how true, why have i never thought of that'. oh how often we pray for financial blessings. Not only for ourselves, but also for others. So often we recieve a letter from friends preparing for ministry and asking for support, they ask that we pray that the funds would be provided. In this season of life, financial blessing is a daily prayer. But I cannot say the same about spiritual blessings in my life. Why do we not pray for spiritual blessings in our lives or in the lives of others? Is it perhaps not as important to us? Are we not as worried or concerned about growing spiritually, being spiritually blessed, or spiritually stretched? I admit that this is not in the front of my thoughts nor does it make me an anxious. During the past few months as this thought continues moment by moment, The Lord is continuously pointing me to
Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

I cannot read this passage without finding comfort and yet be challenged. Why do we worry and put so much time and effort into asking for financial blessings? Is the Lord not going to provide. Since moving to Kentucky, our finances have become less and we wonder where the money is going to come from, BUT there has not been a moment where we were left in need or without. Our God is so Faithful, He tells us in His Word that He will provide, and He does! Oh how He does! We may not be rich, but we are well taken care of. Why not pray that we be rich in mind, heart and soul? I would much rather be spiritually rich than rich as the world defines it. Let us Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness!

I know its been a while, so sorry! I promise I will try harder to update more often. So let me catch you up on our busy life real quick. In the past few months we have joined a local church body, I have ended my babysitting job, David has began his 2nd sememster of classes, I have began my 3rd class, and Gracyn has taken off! Literally.

We have been led to partner with the local body at Victory Memorial Baptist Church. It is an old church that was at one time very vibrant and fruitful for the Gospel, but in the past several years has been declining in number and in fruitfulness. We have joined with a few other students and families from the Seminary as interns for the church (well David is techinally the intern). We have just hired a full time pastor and are beginning to make some changes. Please pray that God would revive this local body and use us to reach the surrounding community and that we would find encouragement in the fruit that we do see. We have recently started a Ladie's Bible Study on Wednesday mornings which has been a blessing for me in time with the Lord and in fellowship with sisters.

I am now back to one child! I was keeping another little girl during the days. This lasted for about 3 months and ended the week after Christmas. I really enjoyed the time with this precious little girl, but it is nice to be back with one child. This was just one more way God showed us His mighty and perfect provision: We used the extra income to pay off our hospital bills. I actually ended up watching her for about a month longer than originally planned, and the amount we earned was almost the exact amount of debt we had. Praise God for His Perfect Provision.

Oh back to the books. We really enjoyed Christmas break and are very grateful for the time we were able to spend together as a family. David has began his 2nd semester of classes. He is currently taking his second course in Greek, an Introduction to Biblical counseling, and a survey of Christian Ethics. So far he is enjoying his classes and is thankful for the opportunity.

I have started my 3rd class in the Seminary Wives Institute. This term I am taking a Baptists Beliefs class, which is similar to an introductory systematic theology class. It is taught by Dr. Mohler (the president of the seminary) and 3 other professors. I am really excited about this class, and have already been blessed by the first 2 nights.

So people are always saying kids grow so fast, dont blink or you'll miss it....man is it true! It seems like we were just discussing baby names and wondering what our sweet little girl would look like. And now, she is 8 1/2 months old and is getting into everything! Gracyn now has 4 teeth, and is in the process of getting 2 more. And she has certainly learned how to use them. At 8 months old, we have already receieved news of her trying to bite other kids in the nursery. She has become an expert in crawling and is now standing and pulling up on everything, as well as walking along with a walker toy (not sure the correct name for that). She is so much fun and it has been such a joy and blessing to watch her grow and see her personality starting to shine.

Prayer Needs:
Please Continue praying for David's job situation. He is still working at Cintas, but we are praying for open doors for a different job. This job is extremely strenuous on David's body and with a full time school schedule and an almost fulltime work schedule, David is left with little time for a wife and daughter. 2 days a week David is only home for 30 minutes while Gracyn is awake. We are praying for something that will open up for more time at home and more time to spend on school work, but will still pay the bills. But more importantly, please pray that God will continue to use David at Cintas to further build His Kingdom. David has had several opportunities to share the Gospel with a few co-workers, and we praise God for all He has done and is doing there.

God has been so FAITHFUL!!! He has provided every need and has overwhelmed us with His steadfast love. We have been so blessed by the support of our brothers and sisters from Venture and we are so thankful for all the prayers and support from all of you! Thank you!!!!

One down, many more ahead

Ok, I know you are all (all 5 of you who actually read this) thinking finally, a new post. I'm sorry it has been over a month since our last post. You may be thinking 'come on, youre a stay at home mom, you have plenty of time to do this). HA, I have quickly found that being a stay at home mom is no joke, and this mom is one busy lady. There has certainly been alot going on lately, but let's start with the most exciting... As of November 9th, we have added one more to the family as we welcomed our second niece Harper Noelle into the world, and she is adorable!

As for David, He has completed his first semester of seminary! One down, many more ahead. I am so proud of him, He has been extremely busy for the last 3 months and has completely exhausted himself, stopping long enough to eat lunch and get a few hours of sleep, but his hardwork has paid off. He really enjoyed his classes and has learned a great amount, but is definitely excited about having a break. And Gracyn and I are very happy to have daddy home for the mornings! Hopefully the next 2 months will be a time of relaxation, personal study, and much needed family time.

As for myself, I am staying busy. My babysitting commitment was originally going to be over by Mid November, however, I offered to continue until the beginning of January. So my preparation of having 2 kids continues!(Clarification - we do not have another one on the way) It is becoming more challenging now that the weather is not as nice, but it is none the less a treat to pour into the life of another child.

We were able to travel home to the 704 for Thanksgiving and we had a wonderful time with the Rhyne family. We drove through the night on Wednesday, leaving KY at 8pm and arriving in NC at 5am after the addition of a 2 hour detour through TN due to an accident blocking off the interstate. Thankfully we are blessed with the best baby, who slept the whole way and still slept til 8:30am on Thursday. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving meal and enjoyed spending time just sitting around the house with family and not doing anything! We were able to catch up with friends and visit Venture for worship Sunday morning before hitting the road. And once again our wonderful baby blessed us with her ability to sleep like crazy.

I must give praise to our Father who never ceases to amaze us with His Perfect Provision. We were surprised with a carepackage (a huge pile consisting of several boxes)from a Sunday school class from Venture. We were shocked at the amount of items given to us, by whom we will never know. It was so encouraging to be reminded that we have brothers and sisters supporting us and most importantly lifting us up in prayer. As I was unpacking and putting all the items away, it was incredible to find so many of the very items that were on my list of things we were running out of and needed to get. Oh, what a wonderful and sovereign God we serve. It is amazing how logically the numbers of income and bills dont add up, but yet we have never gone a minute without. God's provision and timing is perfect.

Thank You Venture Family and Thank you to all of our friends and family who have helped us immensely throughout our journey thus far. We would not be where we are without you. We Thank God for using each one of you in our lives!

Answer to Prayer

2 days before we moved to Louisville, David sold his bronco making us a 1 car family. For the past several months we have been praying that God would provide for us another vehicle. David has been driving the car to work, leaving Gracyn and I stuck at home for most of the day. But after much prayer, we now have another car! God has provided! As always! God is so Faithful and is always right on time! We know several of you have been praying with us, and we thank you for your prayers! God is good!

Thus Far

We offically have a blog, now lets just hope it stays updated. We have started this blog with the intention of keeping in touch with our friends and family who are scattered across the world. We love each of you dearly and wish we could visit and communicate with you more often, so we wish that you will follow our blog as we share the details of our life with you.

Well, lets catch up to date... For the past few years God has been stirring up a desire for seminary in David. He acted on this desire by enrolling for online courses through Liberty University around August of last year. After much thought and prayer, we decided it was not the right time. Then sometime around February of this year we felt the Lord leading us to Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. So the day after Gracyn's 6 week doctor visit we packed the truck and hit the road. Then several hours and 500 miles later, we arrived at our new apartment.

So what are we doing now? Well, David is a full time student at Southern Seminary. He is currently taking Elementary Greek, Intro. to Church History, and Personal Spiritual Disciplines. He is also working full time at Cintas (the uniform company). After a few weeks he was able to drop his hours to about 33 a week, so now he works from 2:30pm to 9:30, Monday thru Friday. So as you're probably thinking, David is a busy guy. I am blessed to be a stay at home mommy and spend my days raising the sweetest little girl in the world. Also, as of 2 weeks ago, I am keeping an 18month old little girl 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday thru Friday, and yes, I have my hands full.

Gracyn update: In case you somehow missed the fact that we now have a kid, Gracyn Adair Rhyne was born May 26, 2011. She is now 4 months old, weighing in at 13lbs, and is growing every second. She has been rolling over from her stomach to her back for about a month now, and as of last night, she can now roll over from her back to her stomach. She also is eating rice cereal now, and is enjoying it!
